Social Media Policy

The Okapi Conservation Project (OCP) uses social media as an official communication tool to further its mission of wildlife conservation, habitat protection, and community engagement. This policy establishes standards for the appropriate use and moderation of OCP’s social media platforms in alignment with the organization’s governance, ethical values, and public trust responsibilities.

Scope

This policy applies to all official OCP’s social media accounts and governs interactions between OCP and the public on those platforms including comments, replies, messages and user-generated content. It is intended to complement organizational policies, including but not limited to our Privacy Policy.

Purpose of Social Media Use

OCP uses social media to:

  • Communicate our mission, programs, and conservation impact

  • Provide educational content related to okapi conservation and biodiversity preservation

  • Promote transparency, accountability, and informed public engagement

  • Strengthen relationships with donors, partners, and the general public

Standards of Conduct

OCP is committed to maintaining respectful, accurate, and mission-aligned communication. Users engaging with OCP’s social media platforms are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that is lawful, respectful, and consistent with the organization’s values.

The following content is not permitted:

  • Harassment, intimidation, or personal attacks

  • Discriminatory, hateful, or defamatory language

  • False, misleading, or unsubstantiated claims presented as fact

  • Spam, unauthorized fundraising, or commercial solicitation

  • Obscene, violent, or otherwise inappropriate content

Moderation Authority

The OCP communications team reserves the right to monitor, moderate, and manage all content and interactions on its social media platforms. This may include the removal of comments or posts that violate this policy and, when necessary, restricting or blocking users who repeatedly or seriously breach these standards.

Moderation decisions are made to protect the integrity of OCP’s mission, reputation, and community and do not constitute censorship of lawful expression.

Accuracy and Transparency

OCP strives to ensure that information shared through its social media channels is accurate, timely, and reliable. If errors or inaccuracies are identified, OCP will take reasonable steps to correct them promptly and transparently.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Users should not post personal, confidential, or sensitive information—either their own or other’s--- on OCP’s social media platforms. OCP will neverot request sensitive personal information through public social media channels and is not responsible for information voluntarily shared by users.

Special care is taken to protect the dignity and privacy of communities, partners, and individuals featured in our work.

Intellectual Property

All original content published by OCP, including but not limited to text, images, graphics, and video, is the property of the OCP and its parent organization, Wildlife Conservation Global (WCG), unless otherwise noted. Unauthorized use, reproduction, or modification of OCP content for commercial purposes is prohibited without prior written consent.

Policy Review and Amendments

This policy will be reviewed periodically by OCP and WCG leadership and may be amended as needed to ensure compliance with applicable laws, best practices, and organizational standards. The most current version of this policy will be posted publicly.
